Fraud and scams

If you, or a member of your family, have been scammed, defrauded or experienced cyber-crime, report it to Action Fraud - the UK's national reporting centre for fraud and internet crime. 

Anybody can be a victim of fraud - but older people are particularly vulnerable.  Fraudsters can pose as a legitimate authority, such as a bank official, police officer or tradesmen and they can be very credible and persuasive.  This can be through doorstep calling, letters, flyers, email, text or by phone.

Action Fraud provide a central point of contact for information about fraud and financially motivated internet crime.  People are scammed, ripped off or conned every day and Action Fraud is working hard to stop this.

How to deal with unwanted doorstep cold callers

Many people are upset by cold callers arriving unannounced at their homes, please follow the guide above to help you deal with any unwanted cold caller to your property. 

  • Do not answer the door.  If they keep knocking or ringing the bell (they will not for long) ignore them, they will go away
  • If they do not go away ring the police on 101 (non-emergency) or if you have been threatened or made to feel your safety is at immediate risk of harm please call 999
  • If you are being pressurised in your home by a cold caller, contact trading standards' quick response team on 01962 833 666

No cold call zones

Hampshire County Council co-ordinate the no cold calling zones which can be set up in your neighbourhood.

Hampshire County Council also provide "We do not buy goods or services at the door - Please do not cold call" free of charge if you are a Hampshire resident by calling 01962 833 620.

How to deal with unwelcome charity cold callers

As above many people are upset by cold callers arriving unannounced at their homes.  Registered charities perform invaluable work for their causes and without the public's support they would not be able to do this. 

'old calling by charity workers, whether it's genuine or bogus, scares a lot of people, who often don't have the courage to say "No" to them and can compel the occupant to give donations or personal details. 

It's not just on the doorstep that cold callers can intrude, they will send letters through the post and make repeat phone calls.  In the end, many people give, just to get rid of them, but sadly they keep coming back for more.  Please follow our guide above to help you deal with any unwanted cold callers to your property.

 


 

Nuisance phone calls

If you do not wish to receive marketing/sales/nuisance calls, you can add your home and mobile number onto the free Telephone Preference Services (TPS).  It is illegal for organisations in the UK and the rest of the EU to make calls to numbers that are registered with TPS, unless you have opted to receive them.  You can register by phoning 0845 070 0707 or complete online.    

Alternatively, you can buy a phone which guards your calls by monitoring incoming callers and blocks nuisance calls. 

When called, any caller who is not already registered on the phone as friendly will be asked who they are and what they want.  The phone then rings and tells you who is calling and why.  If you don't want to speak, you press a button which blocks those calls from then onwards. 


 

Junk mail

To stop junk mail, you can register your name and UK address with the Mail Preference Service (MPS), which is a free service.  Alternatively you can just ignore junk mail.

Always shred documentation which contains personal details such as name, address, date of birth, bank account details etc before disposing of them in general waste.  Fraudsters may be able to use these details to create financial accounts in your name.  

 

 

 

 


Scamnesty (campaign from the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner)

From September 2018 until Christmas 2018, the Office of the Police Crime Commissioner is running a Fraud Scamnesty campaign.  This is particularly targeting the older and vulnerable members of our communities, it encourages people to report scams, provides advice on how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud, and aims to raise awareness of the financial and emotional impact that fraud can have on victims.  In partnership with Hampshire Constabulary colleagues and Neighbourhood Watch, members of the team will be at a number of Fraud Roadshow events across the Hampshire policing area and support those working with older and vulnerable people in spotting the signs and providing the right help and advice.

The roadshow which is being held within the New Forest is in New Milton on 19 October 2018, 9.30am - 3.30pm at Tesco.

The Office of the Police Crime Commissioner has also placed Scamnesty boxes in libraries and Citizens Advice Bureaus across Hampshire to allow people to post scams they have received anonymously if they so wish, which will then be used for further analysis.  A full list of participating libraries and Citizens Advice Bureaus as well as a list of roadshow events can be found on The Office of the Police Crime Commissioner's website.
